Stencil Ease has been producing stencils since 1980. That sounds like a simple fact – but it is the foundation of something unusual: a company from Rhode Island that began with industrial stencils and today ranks among the largest stencil manufacturers in the USA has transferred its forty years of material knowledge, motif development and production technique into a product line for the bakery. That line is called Designer Stencils. Stencils developed for industrial surfaces and craft walls pose different requirements from those for cakes and cupcakes – but the core questions are the same: how does a contour stay sharp when pressure is applied? How does the material behave under repeated use? How must a motif be constructed to remain legible even with thicker media? Stencil Ease knows the answers to these questions from decades of experience – and Designer Stencils is the consequence. Food-safe, dimensionally stable, designed for multiple application techniques simultaneously: spread royal icing, dust with icing sugar, spray with airbrush. The same stencil, a different result each time. The motif spectrum ranges from floral sprigs through geometric patterns to figurative designs – for cakes, cupcakes, fondant toppers and coffee drinks. At miniSchoggi, a selection of Designer Stencils is available.
Rhode Island, 1980. Stencil Ease builds stencils – not for cakes, but for floors, walls and contractors. The first customers are tradespeople, interior designers, industrial businesses. What the company learns in these years is precise: how must a stencil be constructed to remain dimensionally stable under pressure? What contour does a motif need to remain legible even on uneven surfaces? What material withstands thousands of applications without giving way?
Four decades later, Stencil Ease is one of the largest stencil manufacturers in the USA – and has transferred the accumulated knowledge from those decades into a product line developed for a completely different surface: the cake, the cupcake, the fondant topper, the coffee. Designer Stencils is this line. And the difference from stencils that came into being without this heritage shows itself where it matters most: in the application.
Those who lay a stencil on a cake for the first time make a discovery: the quality of the stencil determines the result more than the technique of the person applying it. A stencil that is too thin bends when royal icing is spread over it. One that is too coarsely designed loses its definition as soon as the medium is applied a little thicker. One with too fine bridges tears after a few uses. And one that is not food-safe has no place in the kitchen.
Designer Stencils solves all these problems simultaneously – because the choice of material and the design of the motifs were not reinvented but optimised from a long production tradition. The stencils are made in a material thickness that enables spreading with an offset spatula and workable media without bending – and at the same time flexible enough to adapt to gently curved cake sides. The motif contours are dimensioned so that they work with thick media such as royal icing as well as with fine powders. The surface is food-safe and can be cleaned after each use with warm water and mild soap – without loss of shape, across many dozens of applications.
What makes Designer Stencils particularly interesting for culinary application is the design for multiple techniques simultaneously. A stencil from this range is not developed for a single application method, but for three fundamentally different transfer techniques.
With powder applications – icing sugar, cocoa powder, glitter powder, powder colours – the stencil lies flat on the surface, the powder is applied through a fine sieve or with a brush and the stencil is then lifted straight upwards. This technique is the fastest and simultaneously allows multi-coloured layered motifs when individual areas of the stencil are covered with paper and dusted with different colours in succession. With airbrush application, the stencil lies on the fondant; the colour is sprayed in thin, even layers. With spreadable media – royal icing, ganache or buttercream – the stencil is held against the surface with one hand, the media applied thinly with an offset spatula and the excess removed before the stencil is lifted straight upwards.
The Designer Stencils range is broadly positioned in terms of motifs. Floral and botanical designs – sprigs, floral ornaments, leaf patterns – form the classic core area and are particularly suited to elegant occasions. Geometric patterns – grids, diamonds, circles, lines – serve the contemporary, minimalist decoration style. Figurative motifs – silhouettes, cityscapes, animals, thematic characters – open up an area particularly sought after at themed celebrations. Seasonal designs for Christmas, Halloween, Easter and further occasions complete the range.
Stencils for smaller surfaces – cupcake size, drink surfaces – complement the larger formats for cake sides and cake tops. All stencils are reusable; cleaned after use with warm water and mild soap, they retain their shape and precision across many applications.

A stencil does not change who you are in the bakery. It changes what is possible in a given amount of time – and what previously required long practice suddenly becomes reproducible on the first attempt. That is not an exaggeration, but the craft logic behind a well-designed stencil product. Designer Stencils has perfected this logic in over forty years of development work.
miniSchoggi carries Designer Stencils because the range delivers on this promise – in a quality felt from the very first application. The stencil lies flat, the contour is sharp, the motif sits cleanly. Whether with offset spatula and royal icing on a cake side, with icing sugar on a simple chocolate cake, or with the airbrush on a fondant topper: the result looks as though someone worked on it for hours. Most of the time it takes minutes.
The range available at miniSchoggi includes stencils for cake sides, cupcake toppers and drink surfaces across various motif categories – floral design, geometric patterns, figurative motifs, seasonal designs. All stencils are food-safe, reusable and suitable for multiple application techniques. The range grows continuously – because the occasion for turning a cake into an experience is never the same twice.
