Getting the topper in place

Only put the topper in just before serving, especially on cream or buttercream cakes – the surface stays neat and nothing tips over in transit. Push the stick in straight and deep enough. On a fondant-covered cake, make a hole with a cocktail stick first so the fondant does not tear. Remove the topper before cutting: it is a decoration and not meant to be eaten.

Yes. Take it off before cutting, wipe the stick clean and store it flat in a box – it will be ready again next December.

Which topper suits a small cake?

For small cakes and cupcakes, the multi-piece sets work better because you can spread the designs out. Large lettering looks best on a cake with a good diameter or on a long Yule log.
