How to use sprinkles, shavings and buttons

Coating the side of a cake

Spread the side with buttercream or ganache, then press the sprinkles or shavings on with the flat of your hand or a palette knife. Stand the cake on a tray so you can reuse whatever falls off straight away.

Shavings and warm hands don't mix

Chocolate shavings melt quickly. Scatter them with a spoon or straight from the pack onto a well-chilled cake. White shavings on dark ganache, dark ones on cream: the contrast does the work.

Buttons for children's parties

Colourful chocolate buttons are a hit on cupcakes, muffins and birthday cakes. Press them into the frosting while it is still soft so they stay put. A good base is our chocolate cupcake recipe.

Frequently asked questions

Which toppings work best on ice cream?

Chocolate sprinkles and shavings. Add them just before serving so they stay crisp. For ideas, see make your own ice cream without an ice cream maker.

How should I store an opened pack?

Tightly closed, cool, dry and away from light. It is best to avoid the fridge, as condensation forms when you take the pack out.

Where can I find larger balls?

Crispy pearls and XL balls have their own category: chocolate pearls and crispy balls. All other decorations are in chocolate decorations.
