Cake Lace and Lace Decoration

Filigree cake lace decor embellishes cakes, cupcakes and cupcakes with a personal touch. We at miniSchoggi explain tips and tricks on how to create perfect lace decor in just a few steps.

What exactly is Cake Lace?

Cake Lace is an edible lace specially designed for cakes and desserts. It consists of a flexible silicone mat or lace printing pattern and a special mixture of edible ingredients such as sugar, water and gelatin.
To make Cake Lace, the mixture is poured into the silicone mat or onto the lace pattern and then baked or dried. The finished Cake Lace can then be carefully removed from the silicone mat or print pattern and applied to the cake or dessert.
Cake Lace is often used to create elegant and detailed lace patterns on wedding cakes, birthday cakes and other festive cakes. It can be purchased in a variety of colors and styles or colored with edible paints and powdered sugars to add a custom touch.
Cake Lace is a popular way to decorate cakes and desserts and give them a unique, sophisticated touch. It is easy to use and can be made in a variety of designs and sizes to meet individual needs and desires.

Making Cake Lace

Beautiful lace can generally be made by hand or by using tools such as a silicone mat. Creating it by hand requires patience and is time-consuming, since a piping nozzle must be used to build up and link the threads of the Cake Lace individually. For this reason, making lace decorations by hand is recommended for skilled decorators or hobby bakers who want to take on new challenges.

An easy method is to use decorative mats. The practical mats made of sturdy silicone have a lace or pattern embossing for the production of various decorative elements. A cake lace or lace decorating paste is now evenly distributed in the mat, the excess is removed and placed to dry overnight. The next day, the decor has dried and can be carefully removed from the mat. If you don't want to wait that long, you can "bake" the silicone mat in the oven at 75 degrees for 10-15 minutes. The resulting decor is somewhat flexible and can be easily "wrapped" around the cake. Butterfly or flower decor can also be manipulated using this technique to conjure up natural decorating elements. The paste can be used directly and is available in different finishes and colors, so you can ideally match the lace decoration to your cake creation. For a special effect, the decor can be painted with food coloring or mixed powder paint.

Notes

Although ready-made Cake Lace decorating paste consists largely of sugar, the paste may contain allergens such as fructose and soy. Please pay attention to the paste manufacturer's allergy warnings when using it.

How to apply Cake Lace?

To properly apply Cake Lace, follow these steps:
1. First, prepare your cake by smoothing it out and applying buttercream frosting or a smooth surface.
2. Then, place the Cake Lace mat on a flat surface, such as a tray or baking tray.
3. Mix Cake Lace powder with water to make a smooth and sticky batter. Refer to the package for exact proportions.
4. Using a spatula or small brush, apply a thin layer of the Cake Lace batter to the mat. Make sure the batter is evenly distributed and covers the entire pattern areas.
5. Remove any excess batter from the mat by gently scraping it off with a spatula.
6. Place the Cake Lace mat in the preheated oven and bake according to the instructions on the package. Baking time varies depending on the producer, but is usually between 10 and 15 minutes.
7. After removing the Cake Lace mat from the oven, allow it to cool for a while until the tip sets and comes away from the mat easily.
8. Carefully remove the Cake Lace mat from the oven and place it on top of your prepared cake. Gently press the lace to make sure it adheres well.
9. Repeat the process to make more lace tips and place them on your cake as desired.
Note: It is important that the Cake Lace batter is applied thinly and evenly, otherwise the pattern of the lace may be lost. It can also be helpful to practice before using it on your actual cake to get a better understanding of the proper consistency and amount of batter applied.
