When do you wear gloves in the kitchen?

There are various reasons to wear protective gloves in the kitchen, but the design differs greatly. As the name suggests, they are there for protection. In some cases, this is heat protection, cut protection, chemical or hygienic protection, the latter for both the user and the food.

A good heat-insulated glove or oven mitt is indispensable when baking and grilling. They are often made entirely or only the lining is made of cotton. Barbecue gloves, which have to withstand particularly high temperatures, also contain other materials such as aramid. Silicone is often found on the surface in the form of lines or nubs as an anti-slip coating, preventing the tray or grill grate from slipping out of the hand. Some of these barbecue gloves are also cut-resistant. This reduces the risk of injury when handling extra-sharp knives and cuts on sharp corners or edges, for example on the barbecue.

Thinner hygiene gloves, on the other hand, are primarily used to protect against contamination, but can also be resistant to chemicals. Hygiene is a top priority in the catering industry in particular, but we also recommend wearing suitable gloves when handling couverture at home, for example. When it comes to lyeing dough pieces, chemical-resistant protective gloves must be worn to avoid chemical burns.

Which oven mitts or oven gloves suit me?

There is a wide range of heat-resistant gloves and cloths to choose from, but which one is right for you? Habit is often the deciding factor. If you liked slipping into large oven gloves as a child, you will probably prefer them to oven mitts and vice versa. But even then, there are still many options.

Chic oven gloves for baking

Many oven gloves are not only practical, but also extremely attractive. They are decorated with great patterns and colors and can be easily hung up with a loop. After prolonged use or a mishap with dough or batter, they can be washed without any problems. These gloves provide effective protection against burns and are ideal for anyone who likes to tinker in the kitchen and wants to have something to look at.

Oven and barbecue gloves

If you like to cook or are often at the barbecue, then these gloves are just the thing for you. They take a little longer to put on than the oversized baking gloves, but once they're on, you can be sure that nothing will go wrong. This glove wraps your hand perfectly thanks to its elastic fit, so that precise movements are possible even when grilling or baking. Handling pots and pans etc. is also very easy, you always have everything under control without burning yourself on one of the pans or lids. Transporting fresh biscuits on a hot, slippery tray is also no problem.

The material can withstand temperatures of up to 350 degrees and reliably protects you from heat and is perfect for grilling. The baking gloves have silicone lines for optimum grip so that even smooth surfaces can be held securely. They can be easily cleaned in the washing machine, but need some time to dry due to the inner lining.

Noble pot holders

These pot holders not only impress with their modern patterns and bright colors, but also with their practical handling. With or without a grip tab, you can use them in no time at all without having to pull them over your hands first. This means you can easily grip hot baking trays or use the cloths as trivets. Storage is also very easy with the attached tabs. The clever design makes them indispensable helpers in your kitchen. You'll never want to work in the kitchen without them again!

Which gloves for lye?

Working with lye requires caution and good physical protection. But then you can make delicious creations without any problems. All the necessary ingredients and protective equipment are available from us online. It is particularly important to protect your hands, as they come into direct contact with the lye. This requires a rubber glove, which is slightly thicker and safer than the rubber gloves that are usually used. Thanks to their chemical resistance, they minimize the risk of injury when dipping the dough pieces.

Due to their chemical resistance, vinyl or nitrile gloves with the corresponding symbol of an Erlenmeyer flask are ideal. We have a particularly suitable model made of vinyl. The glove is perfect for leaching, as it is slightly longer and also protects part of the arm from splashes, is made of alkali-resistant vinyl and has a comfortable and heat-insulating rayon lining.

In addition, we strongly recommend wearing alkali-resistant safety goggles to avoid chemical burns from splashes. As soon as the lye has been diluted and emptied or bottled and sealed for reuse, the work surface is clean and all items in direct contact with an acid such as vinegar or lemon juice have been neutralized, you can put the protective equipment away again.

Latex, vinyl or nitrile - which material offers the best occupational safety?

There are various different materials in the field of hygiene gloves. Each product has advantages and disadvantages, but much also depends on personal preference.

Latex gloves are particularly flexible and thin, so they are excellent if you still need good dexterity and want to work and feel with precision. Unfortunately, latex can cause allergic reactions in some people. The material is also only suitable for food to a limited extent. For ready-made pastries, uncut fruit and vegetables and liquids, unpowdered latex gloves are fine, but as soon as fats, oils, acids or alcohol are involved, they should be avoided. The same applies to vinyl gloves. However, if you want to create fondant flowers, for example, the thin materials are perfect. However, always make sure to use the non-powdered version, otherwise the powder itself could cause contamination in the food. The rubber gloves must also be marked as food-safe.

Nitrile is the most popular material for gloves in the kitchen. It is very resistant and therefore suitable for all kinds of food. They are also very strong and do not tear easily, even under mechanical stress.

What needs to be considered with protective gloves?

The most important thing about protective gloves is that they have the right protective properties for the task. A barbecue glove in the couverture is just as useless as nitrile gloves as cut protection when handling extra-sharp knives and when grating and planing.

Always pay attention to the specified heat resistance of barbecue or oven gloves. If you only want to take a tray out of the oven for a short time, classic oven mitts and oven gloves are perfect. However, if you need to hold a slippery, hot grill rack for a longer period of time in order to adjust its height by a few centimetres, protective gloves made of aramid, for example, are better. These offer anti-slip technology in the form of silicone lines over the entire surface.

If you are working with lye, our lye-resistant gloves are definitely the best choice. We recommend ordering these together with the safety goggles, so you can create perfect and original lye baked goods with real lye and still always be on the safe side.

Our range includes vinyl gloves for preparing various dishes. These are very tear-resistant and protect you and your creations. We mostly use them for working with chocolate, for example for coating delicious truffles. The vinyl gloves are powder-free, which is a big plus when working with food. No powder gets into your food and it stays clean. However, the lack of powder makes it much more difficult to put them on with wet hands. So after hand washing, simply wait until they are completely dry again and then put them back on.

Nitrile gloves are recommended if you frequently work with foods containing a lot of acid, such as oranges, berries or other fruits, for long periods of time. The same applies to handling meat.
