How to prepare your dummy

Before using the dummy, you should cover it with fondant or marzipan. Place the cake dummy on a damp cloth to prevent it from slipping. Now you can coat the cake dummy with a little buttercream, royal icing or jam. This will help the fondant or marzipan to stick to the dummy cake later. Depending on how you want to present your cake, you can also use buttercream. To roll out the fondant or marzipan, you need a special ingredient: baking starch. A similar process is used when baking cookies. To prevent the dough, or in this case the fondant, from sticking to the rolling pin or the work surface, sprinkle a little baker's starch on the work surface and also on the rolling pin. Baker's starch is a very fine starch obtained from potatoes. The fondant or marzipan is carefully rolled out to 2-3 mm and then placed on the dummy cake. You can use a fondant smoother to ensure that the fondant adheres properly to the cake. Use the fondant smoother to smooth the surface of the cake first and then the sides. As soon as the dummy and your cake are ready, the individual parts just need to be placed on top of each other. The dummy is very stable, so you don't need any additional supports to give the cake stability. Once you have placed the dummy and the cake on top of each other. You can now start decorating and finish the cake and dummy to your heart's content.

Practice makes perfect

Dummies are also suitable for practising cake decorating. With a cake dummy, you can teach yourself how to cover and decorate a cake at your own pace without your cake melting. Covering can be particularly tricky, as the covering can tear quickly, especially with marzipan. The great thing about the dummy is that as soon as it tears, you can simply pull it off and start again. If your blanket keeps tearing anyway, you can try not to roll it out too thinly and be careful with the starch. Too little baker's starch can cause the blanket to tear and, conversely, too much baker's starch can cause the fondant to become dry and tough. In this case, the fondant can become brittle. If you have used the fondant several times for practice purposes, you should no longer use it for the final result for reasons of hygiene and appearance.

Cake dummies the cake jokers

The dummy is a real joker, especially for wedding cakes. But it is also popular for other celebrations, whether birthday parties, anniversaries or baby showers. A small celebration, but a huge cake. The dummy is the perfect helper to make your cake bigger. Even a party of 20 people can enjoy the sight of a work of art. The dummy is also a popular dummy for display cakes. The decorated dummy can be found in the shop windows of cafés, bakeries, patisseries or

Styrofoam or polystyrene as a material

Styrofoam is known in the household as a good insulator and packaging material. Styrofoam is nothing more than a foamed plastic that is also used for food packaging. It can withstand a lot of weight and is also dimensionally stable. Styrofoam consists of 98% air due to the foaming process and is therefore very light. However, it can be broken apart with force, which is why you should be careful not to place too much weight on one side of the dummy on an edge. Even if the material is used for food packaging, Styrofoam should not be consumed, as plastic is very difficult to biodegrade. You should therefore always carefully remove the edible part of the cake from the cake dummy before cutting open your cake. Only use the dummy for presentation and display purposes.
