How to prepare your dummy

Before using the dummy, you should cover it with Fondant or marzipan. Place the Cake dummy on a damp cloth so it cannot slip. You can then spread a little Buttercream, Royal icing, or jam over the Cake dummy. This helps the Fondant or marzipan adhere better to the dummy cake later on. Depending on how you want to present your cake, you can also use Buttercream. To roll out the Fondant or marzipan, you need a special ingredient: Magic roll-out powder. A similar process is used when baking biscuits. To prevent the dough – or in this case the Fondant – from sticking to the Rolling pin or the work surface, sprinkle a little Magic roll-out powder on the work surface and on the Rolling pin. Magic roll-out powder is a very fine starch derived from potatoes. The Fondant or marzipan is carefully rolled out to 2–3 mm and then placed on the dummy cake. To ensure the Fondant sits and lies properly on the cake, you can use a Fondant smoother. With the Fondant smoother, first go over the top surface of the cake and then the sides. Once the dummy and your cake are ready, the individual pieces simply need to be stacked on top of each other. The dummy is very stable, so you do not need any additional support to give the cake stability. After stacking the dummy and the cake, you can start decorating and finish both the cake and the dummy to your heart's content.

Practice makes perfect

Dummies are also great for practising cake decorations. With a Cake dummy you can teach yourself how to cover and decorate a cake at your own pace without your cake melting away. Covering can be particularly tricky, since especially with marzipan the covering can tear easily. The great thing about the dummy is that if the covering tears, you can simply peel it off and start again from scratch. If your covering keeps tearing anyway, you can try not rolling it out too thin and handling the Magic roll-out powder carefully. Too little Magic roll-out powder can cause the covering to tear, while too much Magic roll-out powder makes the Fondant dry and tough. In that case the Fondant can become brittle. If you have used the Fondant several times for practice purposes, you should not use it for the final result, for both hygiene and aesthetic reasons.

Cake dummies – the cake joker

The dummy acts as a real joker especially for wedding cakes. But it is also welcome at other celebrations, whether a birthday party, anniversaries, or a baby shower. A small gathering, but an impressive cake. The dummy is the perfect helper for making your cake look bigger. This way, even a celebration with 20 guests can enjoy the sight of a work of art. The dummy is also popular as a prop for display cakes. You will often find the decorated dummy in the shop windows of cafés, bakeries, and patisseries or

Styrofoam, also known as polystyrene, as a material

Styrofoam is well known in the home as an excellent insulator and packaging material. Styrofoam is simply a foamed plastic that is also used for food packaging. It can bear a great deal of weight and is dimensionally stable. Due to the foaming process, Styrofoam consists of 98% air and is therefore very light. It can, however, be broken apart with force, which is why you should take care not to place the dummy on an edge with too much weight on one side. Even though the material is used for food packaging, Styrofoam should not be consumed, as plastic degrades very poorly biologically. You should therefore always carefully remove the edible part of the cake from the Cake dummy before cutting your cake. Use the dummy only for presentation and display purposes.
