What do you do with a piping bag?

Piping bags are the perfect tool for making cakes and tarts, cupcakes and cookies, piped pastries and much more. They are easy to use and allow you to create great decorations and elegant embellishments on your baked goods. A piping bag is also worth its weight in gold for savory or sweet chocolates.

Piping bags can be used with or without piping nozzles and are therefore suitable for various creations. No nozzle is required to pipe hollow praline balls or fill them with melt-in-the-mouth ganache or to add a delicious cream to cakes or éclairs.

If you want to decorate cakes attractively with rosettes, create flowers from buttercream or refine cupcakes and muffins with a great topping, nozzles are a must! With disposable piping bags, the tip is cut off and disposed of; the nozzle or adapter for nozzles then protrudes slightly at the front. Reusable piping bags already have a second opening. These are often made of sturdy and hygienic plastic, polyester or cotton.

Cornet paper with its small opening is more suitable for lettering and intricate decorations made of egg white icing or chocolate.

With a huge selection of different piping bags, nozzles and other accessories, there are no limits to your creativity!

Can piping bags be washed and reused after use?

Whether a piping bag is reusable depends on its material and the filling material. If the bag is thin, it can tear quickly if it is used several times. Don't worry, our disposable piping bags are very robust and can be washed and reused without any problems. Our reusable piping bags made of thick plastic are particularly recommended and can even be cleaned in the dishwasher. However, make sure that reusable piping bags are only used for doughs that will be baked afterwards. For hygienic reasons, cold creams or similar masses should always be applied with fresh piping bags. Depending on your requirements, you can buy high-quality disposable or reusable professional piping bags.

How do you clean a piping bag?

Once the treats have been piped and the cupcakes decorated, it's time to tidy up. If there is any mixture left over, pipe it into a suitable container so that you can use it up later. Then remove the nozzle from the bag. It is best to squeeze and shake it out at the back so that the opening at the tip of the bag is not too large the next time. If used, the adapter is also removed and cleaned separately. Some reusable piping bags can be put in the dishwasher in the same way as stainless steel nozzles. For particularly thorough cleaning, you can turn the inside out beforehand.

Disposable piping bags, on the other hand, should be cleaned by hand. Pour in a little washing-up liquid, close the tip and pour in a little water. Then close the back and move it back and forth and rub the middle a little. This removes any dough and cream residue and distributes the washing-up liquid well. Then rinse the bag well and leave it to air dry.

Which piping nozzle for what?

Each piping nozzle offers a wide range of uses. In addition to the popular hole and star nozzles, there are numerous other fascinating and useful shapes that you can discover here.

Perforated grommets

Fancy baking? Perforated nozzles are versatile and can be used to shape or fill various baked goods. You can also decorate all kinds of things with small and large dots. Macarons, éclairs and choux are shaped perfectly and evenly with a 10 mm piping nozzle. This can also create beautiful shapes, such as long tongues or hearts. Use a slightly smaller nozzle for filling éclairs, choux and macarons. And with solid ganache, you can create beautiful chocolates in no time at all. The small round nozzles are ideal for delicate cake decorations, a subtle garland on the edge of the cake or for attaching fondant flowers.

Star nozzles

There are various ways to use star nozzles for cake decorating. By using different sizes and piping techniques, you can create a variety of decorations for your cakes and cupcakes. Large star nozzles are also ideal for elegant cupcake toppings. The French star nozzle with its many small prongs is perfect for piping cookies. Let your creativity run wild and transform your baking creations into true works of art!

Russian grommets

With these great nozzles, you can conjure up flowers like a pro and beautiful buttercream designs on cakes, cupcakes or cakes in no time at all. Thanks to their special shape, the entire pattern is created at once, but a certain firmness of the mixture is required. It looks even more impressive when you combine different colors of buttercream.

Leaf grommet

Leaf nozzles are perfect for forming beautiful leaves out of buttercream. It works best to place the leaves last in the spaces between the flowers to create a stunning effect.

Special grommets

The other nozzles all have their own special use. The name often reveals what they are intended for, such as the filling flower nozzle or the Berliner filling nozzle. You can use the dahlia or petal nozzle to pipe petals from various flowers. Star ribbon nozzles are perfect for decorations and especially for beautiful basket patterns. Berliner filling nozzles are also used in bakeries to give treats a sweet filling.

What can I use if I don't have a piping bag?

The deliciously fragrant pastry has cooled, the cream is ready and suddenly you realize that you don't have a piping bag to hand. This is annoying, of course, but in most cases it is easy to replace. If, for example, you want to apply filigree lettering, fine stripes or small dots, a piece of cornet paper or baking paper will suffice. These can be quickly rolled into a cornet and used to pipe small amounts of egg white icing or chocolate.

Due to their small size, however, they are not suitable for larger quantities of filling or for use with piping nozzles. You can often use a fresh plastic bag for this. Cut off a corner, insert the desired nozzle and then the mixture and get started! This works particularly well for soft mixtures such as cream fillings or whipped cream. A thin plastic bag is often not stable enough for dough or firm buttercream. A thicker freezer bag may be able to help here. However, piping bags and nozzles work best, so it's best to get a roll of sturdy disposable piping bags, a suitable set or a reusable piping bag from our store in advance.
