How to prepare your dummy

Before the dummy is used, you should cover it with fondant or marzipan. Place the cake dummy on a damp cloth so that it cannot slip away. Now you can coat the cake dummy with some buttercream, royal icing or jam. So the fondant or marzipan can stick better to the dummy cake later. Depending on how you want to present your cake, you can also use buttercream. To roll out the fondant or marzipan, you need a special ingredient, and that is: baker's starch. A similar process is found in cookie baking. To prevent the dough, or in this case the fondant, from sticking to the rolling pin or work surface, sprinkle some baker's starch on the work surface and also on the rolling pin. Baker's starch is a very fine starch obtained from potatoes. The fondant or even the marzipan is carefully rolled out to 2-3 mm and then placed on the dummy cake. In order for the fondant to adhere properly to the cake, you can use a fondant smoother to help you. With the fondant smoother you now first run the surface of the cake and then the sides. As soon as the dummy and your cake are ready, the individual parts only have to be placed on top of each other. The dummy is very stable, so you don't need any additional supports to give the cake stability. After you have placed the dummy and the cake on top of each other. You can now start decorating and finish the cake and also the dummy to your heart's content.

Practice makes perfect

Dummies are also great for practicing cake decorating. With a cake dummy, you can teach yourself how to cover and decorate a cake at your own pace without your cake melting away. Covering can be particularly tricky, as especially with marzipan the cover can tear quickly. The great thing about the dummy is that once it tears, you can just pull it off and start over. If your blanket tears again and again, you can try to roll out the blanket not too thin and be careful with the baker's starch. Too little baker's starch can cause the blanket to crack, conversely too much baker's starch will cause the fondant to become dry and tough. In this case, the fondant can become brittle. If you have used the fondant several times for practice purposes, you should not use it again for the final result for hygienic, but also optical reasons.

Cake dummies the cake jokers

The dummy acts as a real wild card especially for wedding cakes. But he is also welcome at other celebrations, whether birthday parties, anniversaries or a baby shower. Small celebration, but a huge cake. The dummy is the perfect helper to make your cake bigger. So even a party with 20 people can enjoy the sight of a work of art. The dummy is also very popular as a dummy for show cakes. So you can find the decorated dummy in shop windows of cafes, bakeries, pastry shops or

Styrofoam or even polystyrene as a material

The styrofoam is known in the household as a good insulator and as a packaging material. The styrofoam is nothing more than a foamed plastic, which is also used for food packaging. It can withstand a lot of weight and is also dimensionally stable. Styrofoam consists of 98% air due to the foaming process and is therefore very light. However, it can be broken apart with force, so you should be careful not to place the dummy on an edge with too much weight on one side. Even if the material is used for food packaging, you should not eat styrofoam, because plastic is very difficult to biodegrade. Therefore, you should always carefully remove the edible part of the cake from the cake dummy before cutting your cake. Therefore, only use the dummy for presentation and display.
