Originally, Florist ribbon was used in flower shops to bind beautiful arrangements and bouquets. With us the application is very similar, except that here petals, flowers and leaves made from flower paste and Fondant are bound together. The individual parts threaded onto wire can be arranged just as you like and the wire is hidden. Depending on the colour of the ribbon, you give it the look of a brown twig or a green stem.
How to use - Florist ribbon
Florist ribbon is stretchy, colourfast and has a waxed surface. Because it is water-resistant, the ribbon is ideal for working with food items such as cakes and Fondant. To begin, the petals need to be prepared. To do this, thin leaves are shaped from flower paste, threaded onto Floral wire and set aside to dry. For a more realistic look, the leaves are shaped slightly irregularly and in different sizes. They can also be painted with Powder color or shimmer.
The individual petals are then assembled into a flower and arranged and secured with the wires. Using the wires, several flowers or individual green leaves can then also be bound together into a small twig or arrangement.
Of course, it is also possible to insert a Floral wire into a Polystyrene flower cone and use it to model a flower. Polystyrene flower cones form the perfect base for the domed shape of various flowers. The arrangement of the leaves is also a little easier this way, and beautiful roses and other blooms are created.
Once all the wires are twisted together as desired, it's the ribbon's turn. Choose the right colour — light green for a flower stem, brown for a twig, white to hide the wires on a cake — and start wrapping. The ribbon is stretched slightly and wrapped as tightly as possible around the wire. It is then wound on firmly, always overlapping slightly. The ribbon only adheres properly when it is tensioned and pressed down, so you can still make minor corrections if needed. The Florist ribbon is wrapped around all the wires in this way, pulled taut repeatedly and pressed down a little. Once you reach the top at the bloom, the wire is fully covered; pull tight once more and press firmly, then you can simply cut the ribbon and it will hold by itself.
The finished arrangements and twigs are ideal for decorating cakes.
