These cutters are classics of Swiss Christmas baking: crescents, Brunsli, pretzels, Kipferl and almond rings have been on baking trays for generations. In this category you will find 10 cookie cutters for these traditional Christmas biscuits, from the Mailänderli moon to Brunsli.
Mailänderli, the Swiss butter biscuits, are cut into many shapes – the moon and crescent are among the favourites, along with hearts and stars. The recipe: Mailänderli – our favourite recipe. Brunsli are sticky: roll the mixture out on sugar rather than flour and let the cut biscuits dry for a few hours before baking them briefly in a hot oven. Vanillebrezeln turn out especially even with the pretzel cutter; you will find the recipe under Vanillebrezeln. Kipferl are usually shaped by hand; with the cutter they are all the same size and bake at the same rate.
Chill the dough well before cutting so even the thin tips of the crescents stay clean. Place the crescents offset next to each other to leave fewer scraps. Two other classics have their own categories: cinnamon star cutters and Linzer cookie cutters for Spitzbuben. You will find every design from stars to St Nicholas among our Christmas cookie cutters.
No, you can also cut the mixture into diamonds. With the Brunsli cutter, however, they are all the same size and bake evenly – important, as Brunsli only spend a short time in the oven.
For Mailänderli in the biscuit tin, use the small crescent or the mini moon. The large crescent and the crescent with a face are ideal for decorating and for children, while the crescent with little moons makes a pretty pattern.
