Mummy, ghost, bat, spider and grave: five Halloween motifs, and yet you only mix a single frosting. The trick lies in the order. The white frosting first becomes the mummy and the ghost, then Oreo crumbs are added for the bat and the spider, and finally some cocoa for the earth on the grave. That way no bowl is left half full at the end.
Under every cupcake sits a whole Oreo. During baking it softens slightly and forms its own moist layer, which you can clearly taste when you bite into it.
The frosting gets its firmness from fondant rather than icing sugar. That is why it also holds fine shapes such as the mummy's bandages.

Baking cupcakes
1
Mix the wet and dry ingredients separately
Whisk the eggs with the sugar and the Flavour paste for vanilla, then add the milk and the melted butter. Sieve the flour, cocoa, Baking powder and salt into a second bowl.
Sieving really pays off here: cocoa likes to form lumps, and those won't dissolve in the finished batter.

2
Stir briefly
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ones and stir only until no flour is visible. Every extra minute develops the gluten in the flour, and the cupcake turns tough instead of light.

3
A whole Oreo as the base
Place the baking cups in the cupcake tin and put one whole Oreo in each, flat side down with the filling facing up. Use the portioner to add two portions of batter on top, until the cup is about two-thirds full.
No more than that: the batter rises in the oven, and an overflowing cupcake can't be decorated neatly.

4
Bake at 170 °C for 16 minutes
Bake the cupcakes at 170 °C convection for 16 minutes and do the skewer test in the middle. It's intended that the Oreo at the bottom stays soft.
Then let the cupcakes cool down completely. A frosting made of butter and cream cheese melts at the slightest residual heat.

Frosting
1
Beat butter and fondant, add cream cheese last
Beat the soft butter with the fondant using the flat beater until the mixture is light and fluffy. Give the fondant time: it is firm at first and only becomes smooth through beating.
Fold in the cream cheese only at the very end and only briefly. If it is beaten for too long it becomes runny, and a runny frosting does not hold its shape.

Decoration
1
Cut the Oreo pieces
Cut everything before you start with the frosting, sticky fingers make this tedious.
For the gravestone, cut a whole Oreo straight along two sides so it becomes angular. Keep the offcuts: they will be the bat's ears. For the bat, open one Oreo. The half with the filling is the body, and you break the other half into two pieces for the wings. Finally, crush five Oreos for the frosting and the soil.

2
Mummy: crumbs first, then bandages
Spread a thin layer of white frosting over the cupcake, it only serves as glue. Then dip it upside down into the Oreo crumbs until the surface is covered in dark.
Now pipe white frosting criss-cross over it with the star ribbon nozzle, deliberately uneven: the disorder is what makes the mummy, and every bandage stands out against the dark base. Place two Candy eyes in a gap, done.

What you need
3
Ghost: smoothly flipped
Pipe a high dollop of white frosting and place the cupcake upside down on baking paper. This flattens the dome evenly, as is hard to achieve by hand. Lift it off carefully and use dark cake icing in a cornet to paint the eyes, nose and mouth.

4
Now the crumbs go into the frosting
Only once the mummy and ghost are finished do you stir the Oreo crumbs into the remaining frosting. From here on it is speckled brown, and it will no longer be white.
5
Bat: body, wings, ears
Pipe a dollop of Oreo frosting with the star tip. Lay the Oreo half with the filling facing up flat on top as the body, and push the two broken pieces in at the sides as wings. Halve the pieces from the headstone and place them on top as ears. Fix the eyes in place with a dab of cake icing.

You will need these
6
Spider: legs first, then the body
The order matters here: first pipe the legs directly onto the frosting with dark cake icing, and only then place an Oreo on top as the body. Done the other way round, you can no longer reach under the cookie with the tip. Stick the eyes onto the Oreo with a dab of icing.

7
Grave: the final step
Stir cocoa and more crumbs into the rest of the frosting until it is earthy brown. Pipe it on and sprinkle Oreo crumbs over it, which is the soil.
Push the square-cut Oreo in upright and write «R.I.P.» on it with white cake icing. For such fine lettering, fill the melted icing into a cornet and cut off only a tiny tip.

Storage & shelf life
Because of the cream cheese, the finished cupcakes belong in the refrigerator, in a closed tin. They keep for two to three days. Take them out half an hour before serving, as the frosting tastes of little when cold. The Oreo decorations soften over time: if you want to prepare ahead, bake the cupcakes the day before and only decorate on the day itself.

Nice with it
Not necessary for the recipe, but it goes well.

So that it is guaranteed to work
White first, brown last
From one bowl you make three frostings: white, with crumbs, with cocoa. Each stage is final. So make the mummy and ghost first, then the bat and spider, and the grave last of all.
Only on cold cupcakes
Butter and cream cheese melt at the slightest residual warmth. Then the frosting runs, and wings and gravestones tip over. If in doubt, put the cupcakes in the fridge for half an hour.
Cut the gravestones first
The two edge pieces of the gravestone are the bat's ears. So cut the gravestones first, even though you only need them at the end.
Frequently asked questions
The whole cookie softens slightly while baking and remains as a separate, moist layer under the cupcake. Crumbs would spread through the batter and disappear into it.
Powdered sugar instead of fondant works, but the frosting becomes softer and holds fine shapes less well. For the mummy's bandages and the ghost's tuft you need the firmness of fondant.
25 pieces: 12 for the bases, 5 to crush and 8 to cut into shapes. Better to buy a few extra, because when you split them open, not every cookie breaks the way it should.
