What makes an angled spatula?

The angled spatula replaces many other utensils in the kitchen, which is why you absolutely need an angled spatula in your kitchen. The angled spatula replaces a cake or pie server or a knife for spreading cakes, cupcakes and other dishes. In confectionery, the angled spatula is needed for cakes, but also for small patisserie and chocolate production.

The spatula or pallet always has the same design. The spatula consists of a long handle and a flat steel blade with a rounded tip. The palette can also be slightly angled close to the handle. This gives even better freedom of movement. The angled spatula is available in different sizes. This makes it perfect for lifting everything from small patisserie to large cakes.

What are the differences between spatulas?

On the one hand, there are thin, long angled pallets. These are perfect for smoothing out cakes. This allows you to create a royal icing cake that has a perfect surface thanks to the angled spatula. On the other hand, there is the medium to small angled palette. This shorter angled spatula is wider. The wider angled spatula is perfect for lifting cakes or patisserie. The wide steel blade ensures that you can also turn meat in an uncoated pan, for example. Roughly speaking, there are these two distinctions, but the range is huge. These different types of use are not a rule, but are helpful when buying. Depending on what you need your spatula for, you will need a wide or thin, long or short spatula. Both versions are available, angled or completely straight. The different angle can make it easier to get under the cakes when lifting them. An angled spatula is also used when removing and distributing masses. The angle ensures that you can hold the handle better while spreading something on a tabletop. Angle spatulas are available in various sizes. There is the mini angle palette, but also huge angle spatulas over 30 cm long. You can't really lift cakes with the mini angled spatula. The small versions are mainly used for decorations. You can use small angled spatulas either to make small leaves with tempered couverture or to spread patterns into the buttercream with the tip. Depending on the situation, a small angled spatula can also be used to lift pieces of cake from the cake stand or cake plate and place them directly on the guests' plates.

When using the long, thinner spatula, you should make sure that you are working with moist consistencies such as buttercream, Swiss merengue or ganache. The best way to roll out fondant and marzipan is with the Fondant smoother over the cake and smooth it out. The spatula could cause unsightly creases. The spatula could also stick to the fondant or marzipan and tear the top if you are unable to remove the spatula from the rolled fondant. The angled spatula is often used in chocolate production, for example, because it is easier to spread on the marble slab when tabléing.

Which material should you choose for a high-quality spatula?

Steel is often used for spatulas. Preferably stainless steel is very high quality and is therefore particularly popular for the blade. Stainless steel is rustproof and therefore looks well-maintained even after repeated use. Furthermore, stainless steel can also be shaped, resulting in a rounded tip and edges. As a result, there is no risk of injury and use is still not impaired. At best, the blade must be very strong, but still thin. These properties make stainless steel perfect for the spatula. There are several options for handles: on the one hand, there is the wooden handle, which is very natural and also feels nice in the hand. Plastic is also a popular choice. Thanks to the plastic, the spatula can also be put in the dishwasher. This is not so popular with wood if it is not sealed with a plastic cover.
